Can anyone help me with finding out an old Access credit card details

Options
Hiya - can anyone tell me how I can find out an old Access credit card account number. I know that I was sold the Access credit card through Midland bank ltd and I'm still with the same bank and have the same current account number. I've been on to HSBC and given them these details and the address that the card was taken out in but they are saying because I don't have an Access credit card account number they won't help me. I know for a fact that I was forced to purchase ppi. :(:(

You weren't "forced" to do anything, I'm afraid.

You may have been mis-sold an unsuitable insurance policy, however.

How long ago was this? When was the credit account closed? Banks typically only keep such records for around six years unless you remain a customer.

You could send HSBC a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter. The £10 fee will net you everything they have kept on file for you.

You won't just need an account number to complain, though, you'll also need valid complaint reasons.

If the SAR returns no reference to the Access account (and you have no evidence of it's existence in your own archive) then any complaint you might make has failed before it's begun and you will have wasted £10.

Your data is not in the public domain. So, only place for details is you or HSBC.

As this is a closed account, it would be expected that HSBC would destroy old data over time. Midland havent existed since 1999 and Access ceased to be used in 1996. So, we are talking over 20 years ago.

So, you can do a DSAR and see if that turns up anything but you are going to require a lot of luck.

st of all, Access was simply a card brand - so you never actually did business with Access. You were doing business with a bank that supplied credit cards with the Access brand on them. In essence, all Access cards issued after 1973 were MasterCard plastics, but in the early days, the UK-centric Access brand had dominance over the MasterCard brand (and its predecessors, the Master Charge or Interbank brands).

Even when MasterCard was the dominant logo on these cards, you were actually in a credit agreement with an issuing bank, and not MasterCard - so the thing to work out here is just which bank operated your 'Access' card. Something else you should bear in mind is that Access as a brand disappeared from the marketplace in the mid-1990s. So it could be a very old claim, in which case, the likelihood of resolution is low. For starters, the bank is under no legal obligation to retain financial records for any more than six years - so they will likely have no evidence of your payments (of course, if you have your own old statements it will help). Furthermore, it will be difficult to prove things like misselling from so long ago.

All advice in the past has been due to the Access card is approach the bank initially, but leave PPI claims companies where they belong, as wasting any money should you be successful - doubtful
