keeping the car insured while travelling

We are going to be travelling around europe for about 12 months. We want to leave the car at a friends house but keep it insured so we can use it if we return during the 12 mnths for short periods

you can do Day insurance but I believe you have to SORN if no insurance ??

dont want to SORN , jost want to keep it simple and leave it insured.0

I did this while travelling and left the car at a relatives house, I believe I was with Norwich Union at the time, I just told them it was being stored there and occasionally used (including to the garage for the MOT) and they had no issues.
