Repair bill waaaaay higher than estimate

The vehicle is a 2.4D Volvo.
The original estimates at £540 were after they had inspected the car to see what work needed doing.
The turbo bit replacement were refurbished0 -
At least you got the car back; often a garage will want paying before they hand it back. But don't pay anything until you both agree a final cost.0

If it turns in to a full blown dispute pay the £1k undisputed atleast0

OP, did they "estimate" the £1,000 or was it a "quote" for the job? If the latter then my understanding is that the final figure can't be more than that. Also, a quote (I think) has to include or at least state, inclusive or exclusive of any parts or taxes.0

"OP, did they "estimate" the £1,000 or was it a "quote" for the job"
They said that this was the price for the job, when they told me of the extra repairs and cost of that I said words to the effect of "so this extra work will bring the total bill be about £1,000" which they agreed with.
This was verbal and nothing written down. But I expected the final bill to be roughly what they had said. I would not mind a 10-15% variation to this as being reasonable for any other minor costs but if they had said the work would be £2,275 then I would not have gone ahead with the work scrapped the car, and bought a brand new one.
I just dont understand how they think they can get away with such a variation. I feel throughly ripped off and lied to and Im really stressed by all of this.0
