Kayak

Hi there, we joined a Local Yatch Sailing Club, at the end of the Summer Season last year. Where I have now got my kayak stored in a container there, to be told initially we did not need Insurance for just sailing out on my kayak, with no outboard motor, just plain old paddling. Then now to be told we either need to get Insurance as in more of a life Insurance matter I'm guessing, between 2 to 3 million or sign a declaration to say it's ok and not the clubs responsibility if anything goes wrong whilst I'm out at Sea? Does anyone have any more in depth Knowledge on this matter please?

Sounds like the club rules, and you missed them or were mislead when you first joined.

If you want to go the insurance route the club may have recommendations on where to get cover, otherwise try a local broker ( not Swinton)

Thank you would this be an actual law that I would need Insurance? which I can fully understand also, the club has had a break in, My Husband said it may be a case of they need to make sure everything is properly covered.

Your OP referred to life insurance???

There won't be a law that says you must insure your life (or property) and from your OP it looks like the club rules don't insist on it either.

So no need to insure if you don't want to - just sign their disclaimer and keep your fingers crossed
  • So this is from a specific insurance offering, but does a fair job of explainibg possible benefits.

The key one might be the Public Liability cover if ever you wanted to paddle where that is required. The rest is as the others say down to your own risk appetite.

Make sure if you ever kayak when abroad that you consider if it is covered activity. Some Travel insurers do not or do so as an option. The latter indicates that they are familiar with associated claims / higher risk from kayaking.

    But nothing is risk free.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.
