Can you join a telephone cable to extend it?

We wired in a telephone cable when altering the back bedroom a few years ago from the socket on the wall but left the cable in the loft, but it is not long enough to go back to the main box, but we have another extension we no longer use part way back.

Is there a joiner so we can put these two together?

Thanks

Just run another cable from the extension to the new outlet.

    Look at this site:

And if you are using ADSL for internet access you may want to think about not using pin 3 and 4 and only use 2 and 5.

This may explain why: Removing the 'Ring' Wire

Its down the wall, which is why I can't just replace the whole wire.

Will have a look at the thread.

    Thanks

You can join cables with one of these:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=903&doy=24m9

..it has far more connections than you need but will do the job.

Also available at solwise.co.uk (8way Krohn junc box near the bottom of the page).

Ideally you'd need a krohn tool (cheap plastic disposable one for < £1 will do) but you can get away with using a small flathead screwdriver to push the wires in.

    Thanks Andrew

We have a local Maplin and often go to Hull so can utilise both.

Would the line once joined properly be suitable for broadband?

    Thanks

I would think so, try and keep the exposed ends as short as possible.

It should be ok yes as they are suitable for joining Cat5e network cable. If you use a krohn tool (ask in maplin) suitable for IDC-type connectors you should have no exposed end of wire. The proper punchdown krohn tools (look on ebay for them) rather than the cheap plastic ones will also trim off the ends and are well worth the money if you are making lots of connections. The plastic ones survive little more than 6 punchdowns if your lucky.
