If you do a search for "Greek Ferry' in goggle or similar you will come up with lots of info and 2017 schedules. You will need the summer ones. Some sites also have customer written info too or tips and advice. Again websites for particular islands will also give info.

Unless you need a cabin (and usually not worth it or not needed) then advanced booking is usually not required for the inter island ones. For the medium to large ports and busier tourist location there are usually several agencies by the port often each dealing with a different range of ferry companies.
At smaller locations, fewer ferry companies so maybe just one agency or even sometimes just a hut that opens before the ferry arrives (well it was on Lipsi and few years back!).

At a few locations, especially where the ferry leaves away from the population centers, the agency and ferry port may actually be in different locations -I have only come across one from memory- so a bit of research is useful particularly when ferry times are limited.

Day before purchase of tickets usually adequate when it will be busier.

Standard ferry foot passenger prices can be very reasonable even after recent above inflation price rises but not fast and the smaller ones have limited facilities. The flying dolphin hydrofoils are much faster where available but quite a bit more expensive but still not bad by UK standards. The hydrofoils can get busier and full quicker so would be more inclined to book day before.

Addition: as an example see https://www.paleologos.gr/index.php
Blue Star ferry Kos town to Patmos €13.5 , super fast ferry €20+
Do note the travel arrival times though! Research pays.....

Personally, hydrofoils are ok for the shorter trips between islands, but the highlights of my trips tend to be sitting with a drink on the stern deck of a Blue Star ferry, watching the sunset as we depart from the last island, and maybe catching a glimpse of a porpoise in the wake. It's like a really laid back floating party.

Yes I agree, Blue. A laid back ferry with the ability and time to see the views are my preference to being couped up in a cigar tube! Unless time is of the essence or the timing of ferries is unacceptable.
