Childs Passport Query

My children's 1st passport has now expired, it was a five year passport and I am a bit confused when it comes to renewal.

Will i have to pay to have these passports renewed for another 5 years or can I apply for a free extension?

My children are 6 & 8 respectively.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I think you have to pay for a new 5 year child passport.
  • No sorry tou have to pay £45 for ba renewal -it goes up by a pound I think on about the 4th Octoberso save the £1 and apply now.

It gets worse as you will have to get the photos signed by a countersignatory as well.
  • You can renew the passports for 5 years providing:

    * you still have the original passports
    * their last passport was a standard 5 year child passport
    * the old passport is not damaged
    * you do not need to change their name or national status

taken from this site (I can't right click from my work pc to add the link easily)

    http://www.passport.gov.uk/passport_child_eligible.asp

However it appears to still cost the same as as new passport, at £45 per child.

It says you can get a free extension to 10 years from the original date of issue if you hold a five-year child passport issued on or before 26 march 1998

my kids ones have recently expired from 2002, so it would be strange to find ones issued before march 1998 that qualified for the free extension?

Yes, I can't see how you'd have one in 2007 that qualified for a free extension. So it looks like it'll be costing you £90, but you shouldn't need to get the photos countersigned.
  • I have justed renewed dd 1st passport. She had her picture taken when she was a couple of weeks old and when renewing it, it stated that the new picture would have to be countersigned if the new picture did not bear any resemblance to the old picture - she has grown up quite a bit in five years so had to have it signed. Turn around was really quick, only one week, no frills service
