MPPI was often sold as a standalone product from a different provider to go alongside your provider (especially if bought through a broker) so you may not be able to find out if you had PPI even if you get the mortgage details.

You could just ring them up and ask, if they can't see anything, gamble £10 on a DSAR to both banks (request for all the data they hold on you) but depending on how long ago the account was closed, there may not be much left.

You'd also need provable reasons why you were miss-sold of course

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

PPI was rare in the 80s. It was a mid 80s product but wasnt really retailed more heavily until very early 90s.

It was far more common to have life assurance on the lending back then and there was MIG that you had to pay as well. Are you sure you had PPI and it wasnt life assurance or MIG?

Most MPPI is paid standalone and not built into the mortgage. One of the reasons why most MPPI complaints fail. Was yours standalone or built into the mortgage? (if standalone, then your mortgage account number is not going to help as MPPI doesnt appear on the mortgage documentation).

Basically, if you dont have the account numbers or any documentation from that period, then there is no other way to find out unless you ask the lender (assuming it was the lender that sold it and not a third party. Many 80s sales through building societies did not use the branch staff but used a local insurance broker or what went on to become IFAs)
