As one of if not the biggest housebuilder in the UK, there will be plenty of happy and horror stories about Barratts.

I can only relay my personal experience. The sales rep will lie to you. Depending on your estate, the house may well not be finished to a high standard, and you won't be able to get them back to fix it. The garden (yard) will be too small for an active family. Barratt's own "house owner's" manual which they gave me stated "our houses are built to an average standard" - yes it said that and yes I was astonished, they didn't even say "good". So if you want average, go right ahead. But don't say you weren't warned. Mine was below average.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE THEIR FINANCIAL ADVISOR or any other professional that they insist on. They will not have your interests in mind, only the developers.

After looking at new builds and finding that they were not of particular high quality nor large, we looked at an adjacent more established estate (built 10 years ago) by a local builder. The development has 60 houses on it and we found the quality and openness of the estate to be far better than the new builds.

Plenty of space between plots, decent sized gardens, garage you can get a car in (and actually be able to open the car door to get out), good quality fixtures and fittings - ie, all our interior doors are hardwood, quality door hinges, the kitchen looks as good as new, decent sized rooms, large hall way and landing, wide stairs....

I realise that all houses had to be a new build at some stage, some though are quite clearly better than others.

We've just bought a David Wilson house (part of Barrett) and I'm actually very impressed! Our room sizes are fantastic and the whole house is really spacious with a big hall too. Much bigger than I expected.

Surely you knew the size when you bought it?

Yes of course but it's only when living in it that I realise the space we have with our furniture in it etc compared to our last house.
