Advice on Removing a Default on Credit File

Hello,
I have a default on my credit file placed by one of the large mobile phone providers.
I was about 9 months into my 24 month contract when the local mast stopped working for a number of weeks. It affected the locality very badly and even made it into the local newspaper.
I was and still am a completely dependant on my mobile phone and after numerous calls to them asked to be released from my contract as I had to have access to a mobile signal.
They refused. I then was forced into the position where I stopped paying the contract and moved to another provider.
They had placed a default on my account for £551 and refuse to take me to court so I can argue my position.
So, I disagree that there should be a default as I believe they weren't providing the service they were demanding I pay for.
Is it possible to have this default removed please? I don't feel that I owe this money and it's damaging my credit file.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think you were right in your dispute to begin with, as I am more than sure that they never did guarantee that you will have signal at home. It's a standard clause in those contracts to say the opposite.
And you don't have to wait for them to take you to court. If you think that you are not being treated fairly contact either financial or telecomms ombudsman and they will do their thing. This is what you should've done right away, and continue paying while waiting for a ruling, as disputing a service does not mean that you can stop paying for it.0 -

Only incorrect data can be removed from your credit file so you would need to raise a formal complaint with whichever company is now chasing the debt. You can outline your dispute and how you want the matter to be resolved. If they cannot resolve it within 8 weeks you can escalate the matter.
Depending on the provider it would either go to the Telecommunications Ombudsman or Cisas, If your complaint is successful you should be able to get the default removed. However, if the money is deemed to be owed the default will remain for 6 years from the date of default and, unfortunately, there is a risk they could go to court in the future. Good luck,

You shouldn't have stopped paying them as much as the same as you i wouldn't have wanted to. You should have continued to pay whilst fighting them to cancel your contract. you could have gone to the ombudsman a long time ago, 8 weeks after your original complaint about the loss of service.
Unfortunately You didn't pay so the default is correct.0
