Expired Prepaid Visa Card Citibank

As per title, do I have any come back against Citibank who have effectively taken the £40 credit left on a prepaid Visa card, the expiry on the card was indeed 12/16 and having just signed up to online registration I can see that they took the £40 on the 14th January 17.

This is a Nikon cashback promotion cash-back card that I had inadvertently left cash on :(

Do I have any recourse to retrieve my cash, or has it gone forever :(

It was a stupid mistake as I had wanted to spend it on Camera gear I kept it for that when I could have just spent it the first week I had it on petrol or groceries etc..... STUPID STUPID STUPID....

All that said, it 'seems' criminal that the bank can just take the card after just 1 year?? I found an American financial site that suggested you could request a new card, which is why I just signed up online, however, the cash is gone, shown as a minus £40 transaction against 'Expiry of card'.

Thanks for looking, is there anything I can do? I'm currently off long term sick awaiting multiple operations and haven't been receiving benefit for over 6 months, so can ill afford to lose this cash :(
