Where to put £30k short-term?

Hope someone can advise please.
We will shortly be completing on the sale of our flat. Once we have paid off credit cards and various fees (estate agent/solicitor) we will have about £30,000 left. We will use this as the deposit on a new house when we find something suitable - in the meatime we are moving in with relatives.
Where is the best place to put the money? With the current NR crisis, my husband is suggesting under the mattress, but I don't really think that's a good idea
Somewhere it will earn a bit of interest, but we obviously need immediate access to it for when we find a house.
All help gratefully received.

I would put in a Icesave or sainsburys internet saver account as you will need instant access for when you decide to buy a new property and you can get your money within a few days.Had £80,000 in Savings - All GONE!!! BYE BYE:A Single, 27, Aspie, Gooner :A0
