toilet bowl brown

Hi
Toilet bowl in one of our bathroom(which we havent used much) is now draining slowly and water often turns reddish-brown if left for few days.
I tried checking for blockage with a toilet unblocker snake wire.It did not encounter any blockage for up to 4m.
What could be going wrong. And how must it be tackled?

  • Is there a drain/ man hole cover in your garden?

You might need to have a quick look down there

Agree. Also a toilet wire unblocker is not always good on a well blocked toilet as it sometimes only punches a small hole through the blockage.

By the sound of the description I am wondering if you may have roots invading the drainline.Thats why it may look clear with the wire. Red from the roots coating, smell from them rotting in the standing water?. Most drainage pipes are only sections laid down without any binding cement on the joins.

Could even be a collapsed pipe section.

Also check your water board pages. Sometimes they do a repair for free.
If not, do you have a insurance with your water board for problems like this.

  • No 2's stuck in the pipe

  • But no one had used the toilet for more than 3-4 months. When flushing it does not overfull just that it drains slightly slowly.
the toilet in question is one first floor. The other 2 bathrooms in first floor and cloak room downstairs are all draining fine. But the drain pipe for this toilet and other toilets in our house are on two different sides of house.

I was wondering if hardwater deposits could have clogged the "trap" bit of the toilet bowl.

No 2's stuck in the pipe
  • Hi
    no smell
just reddish hue to water standing
my trials with wire snake left few brown crumbles/bit in the bowl wondering if there is some hardwater clogging in the trap.

Pump a mop in and out of the toilet repeatedly to create a vacuum and clear the blockage. I did this a few times with one of my toilets and it cleared eventually.

Use harpic blocks which you leave overnight to clear any lime scale. It seems to work below the water line and beyond.

Touch wood no probs with mine after it was blocked about a year ago.
