We did same thing 1st christmas married.Sooooooooooooooo long ago:rolleyes:
We didnt ditch compleatly 2nd year but bought about 6 very nice decs for tree and took 6 not so posh off.Planned better for following year able to buy 12 and the next.Bought 7 ft tree 100.00:eek: 17 years ago but still looks fantastic. Now have got to stage were tree is almost compleatly coverd in posh decs.Bought in sales in Jan with odd cash xmas gifts on holidays always look out a xmas shop.Much better holiday reminder than a straw donkey:D We buy one dec each year as well for DD & DS these go on big tree (they have a small one in the hall as well as tiny ones in their bedrooms) eldist is 15 now idea is that when they leave home they have the beginings of their own decs.
We make a big day of decorating the house/tree 1 week before Christmas its a routine and each time we unpack a dec there is a memory attached that we can talk about.
Its been a slow process but all the more fun and special for that.We feel its better to be very picky and only buy if your in love with it and better one good one than a dozen you will get board with in a couple of years.
Do you get the idea we like Christmas? We put the tree up late compared to others but by then the kids are foaming at the mouth and so full of excitment. We start to prepare late Nov. when we put up our Jesse tree, starts earlier than an advanvt calender so our count down is more tantalising:D :D

  • I inherited my grandma's fake (but really good quality) Christmas tree when she died, which OH and I dig out each year (ok, correction, I send him up into the loft to get it and jump up and down impatiently while he's up there :D) Right far back as I can remember my mum bought me a new tree decoration each year (even though I'm 28 now she still buys me one actually, bless her cotton socks :)) Some of the older ones she has kept to put on her tree, the rest now live with me, and are hung on my tree each year.

The first Christmas we were together, OH and I bought some lovely plush gold tinsel and some simple but effective gold and red baubles from Safeway (as it was then). Six years on we're still using them, as the real stars of the tree are my assorted baubles and decorations collected over the years, and I think the tree looks really effective.

Where was I going with this? Obviously getting up at 5am does not agree with me :D What I am trying to say (I think :D) that maybe you could put together "a starter pack" of Christmas decs and then build on it each year? Does that make sense?

As for where to buy, how about giving your local garden centre a try? Our local one has a really lovely selection each year, and they have some display trees decorated to give you ideas. I was going to suggest John Lewis for the odd bauble or two but then noticed you live in Devon (lucky you :D) and think the nearest JL is Bristol (or even further away?) I know you bought your decs in Asda last year but the supermarkets do some really nice decorations sometimes (although our local Tesco has usually been stripped bare decorations wise by Dec 1st :D Not guilty...honest! )

  • me being mean lol would wait till the sales and buy some good quality bits and pieces for as little as quarter of the cost.
  • I noticed today that Woolworths have started putting out their decorations. Mostly gold and silver so far and all that was out was tinsel and baubles. Didn't look close enough to see the prices but they are a starting point and I'm sure they will have much more in coming weeks.

my mum does the same and gets me a new dec for my tree every year and i try to find something different for my too, ive got a lot of hand me downs for my tree even a match box my older brother covered in crepe paper when he was a kid in the 70's that still goes oin the tree,

i got ceiling decs from wilkos a couple of years back ( replaces tity old ones) and they have been graet and were good price.

also tey charity shops they get all sorts and you may find a good set of decs ( mainly tree) in good condition alittle different to the shops or the same for a fraction of the cost.

    merry christmas all in advance

Just got back from Instore - loads of last years decorations out - all for 20p each. They had tinsel, packs of baubles, special tree decorations, stockings and indoor tree lights (reduced from £15 to 20p).

Not all had the reduced labels on, but they all go through the till at 20p.
