So, it will be a Garrett GT1749VB PD150 ARL Turbocharger. Costs around the £550 mark if you look around.

Also plenty of vids on youtube on how to replace the turbo if you want to have a go yourself.

The issue may simply be that your turbo is getting a bit gunked up, especcially if you are using supermarket diesel. Try using a fuel additive and filling up with something like BP Ultimate and taking it for a good, hard drive down the nearest motorway.

If that's the case, then search for Golf issues on this forum, there's practically one every week.

I know, it's almost as if loads of people own that model isn't it!

It's not a whoo whoo whoo noise like the old police siren, it's like the long note modern police siren.

If I rev gently while it's idling, the whine increases with the revs.

This is a garage I trust. VW specialists. They've serviced my car for the past 7 years and they are always doing bits and pieces like new bulbs for free for me. I don't think they'd be lying to me otherwise they would be pushing me to do the fix

Where did I say anything about lying? It''s a common misdiagnosis, which I know from personal experience.

I never use supermarket diesel - I always fill up at Esso. I will try that tip though - thank you. Can you recommend a fuel additive?

Sorry if I have offended you, it wasn't intentional.

You haven't offended me, I'm just pointing out that your previous conclusion was incorrectly leapt to.

As I say, it's a very common misdiagnosis. On a car of that mileage, assuming it's been regularly serviced and hasn't been mistreated, a blown turbo on a VAG 1.9TDI is an unlikely scenario compared with the likelihood of a (quite easy to miss) split intake hose or intercooler.
