Hiya,
I knows this is slightly subjective
I was wondering if anyone knows what the average % of salary people spent on rent is?
I googled but didnt find any stat that jumped out at me.

I think the general idea is that you shouldn't pay more than 1/3rd of your salary on rent.
No idea what the actual average is though.0 -
Our combined salary is £50k gross and we spend £9k per annum on rent, so 18% of our gross income. I'd like to think that's pretty average.

Cheers, they were the kind of figures I was thinking too!
Although when you say a 1/3 of your salary would that be gross or net?
I was working it out on net.0 -

I guess that is near 25% of net income which would be my best guess at what is reasonable.

My rent is 25% of gross, 39% of net
Student loans are an absolute killer on net pay, hence the big discrepancy with gross.
But to buy something similar would be 70% of net pay, so not much choice really.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
There was a poll a while ago here or on, uh, another place that discusses housing and prices

fwiw I pay 26% of gross, 37% of net, but that's London for you!Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -
yeah im 30 mins away from london, not cheap here! 25% of net might be doable, not gona be a palace though.
Interesting responses.0 -
My rent (self-contained bedsit/studio) is 35% of nett I expect to get if I have a job. I am temping at the moment and it is 35% of my nett doing that - and if I get a permanent job I'd expect the figures to remain the same.
It would be impossible for me to rent anything cheaper in this area. So that is the minimum it would be. I did look at 1-bed flats, cheapest were 45% of nett, so I chose not to rent one of those.0 -
We pay 17% of our combined gross income. If I don't return to work after maternity leave this will be about 25%..0

We spend about 16-17% of gross like others. We'll probably be expecting payrises over the next few years too, without our rent going up much.0
