Looking for good mobile phone insurance?

About 18 months ago, I was on a trip to Dublin where I was mugged outside a bar on my last night there, the guy ran off with my phone.
Stupid me forgot that Southern Ireland wasn't part of the UK so I didn't bother to take out travel insurance for these two days away either, and then the home insurance refused to pay out for different reasons (that's a long story)
I had got a new phone, and I did eventually get my old phone back, turned out the guy had been caught! Although as much as we fixed the house insurance after this, I'm still not 100% convinced they would pay out if something happened again, plus it's my mum's home insurance and I'm trying my best to be independent and pay for my own things now.
I did join Barclay's and joined their tech pack, although I was fed up of calling Barclays and being put through to the wrong departments due to the language barrier.
I took out a new phone contract on an iPhone, with O2 back in September/October. I didn't take out insurance back then due to my financial status at the time, although now I'm working, I've decided it'd be a good idea to get my own insurance policy with it. I visited an O2 branch today and the guy said it's too late to join them for insurance now, is this correct?
But I just tried looking to get it with First Direct but I don't really want to join First Directory but they don't do the mobile insurance on it's own, I've also just been trying to look at Halifax but it doesn't look as if they offer it either unless I get their ultimate reward, but similarly to First Directory, I already have breakdown cover, I don't really need home insurance, although I'll admit that the travel insurance seems beneficial included with them..
Although I'm wondering if the man in O2 was right to turn me away? Surely only having the phone 3/4 months doesn't stop me being eligible to insure the phone?
Secondly, are there any good deals out there?

I just contacted O2 customer services online and they said I can only insure the phone within 28 days of purchase. So that answers that question then0

Here you go
Once you buy or upgrade to a new mobile, you've got 28 days to get O2 insurance
You have to be with O2 and over 18 to get one of our insurance policies0 -
I can't understand why anyone would pay anything like £5-15/month to insure a phone. Just be careful with it! If you really want to, there are a bunch of cashback offers on the likes of Top Cashback - and you may be better off changing your home insurance provider.0

I do look after it, but sometimes you can't be too careful. I was sat outside a bar once when my friend inside asked me if I was alright, I replied saying I was and then all of a sudden I just had it snatched and stolen by some guy sprinting down the street.
I was lucky he was caught, but with the insurance problems, I was left with a big bill on a new one..0 -
claiming on your home insurance may not be so good in the long run, premiums increase for x years for example. I would save for claims that are bigger such as leaks and roof repairs"It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

Use various security features on the phone so you dont get big bills.
Dont have a flashy phone.
Theres plenty of insurers out there you can choose.0
