It could be that you were credited with the price of the item pre-sale, and that the retailer's system doesn't take that kind of thing into account, hence the disparity.

You don't say how much the difference is. The mark-up of goods is generally significant ahead of a sale but, either way, it amounts to a careless accounting error, so I'd be inclined to point it out and leave it to the retailer to decide whether an adjustment is necessary. If I were he, I'd thank you for your honesty and let you keep it!:)
  • Morally, you should go back to the store and tell them. Practically, however, I think this will prove difficult, if not impossible. If you are bothered about the extra money, why don't you give it to charity?

  • if the credit is for £5 or less, then donate to charity.
If more, go back to the store & see what they say.
oh and by the way it's spelled receipt
    I before E except after C! easy.
  • If you receive an erroneous refund which is in excess of the money due to you, and you are aware of the error, say nothing and keep the excess sum, you are guilty of theft.

I recently returned something I'd bought in the sale, for which I received store credit (as I'd lost the receipt). I've since found the reciept and can see I actually paid less for the item than what I was credited back. Should I go back and let them know?

If they had credited you with less than you had paid for it, would you be chasing up the difference?

You don't really need to go back to the store - send an email. If it's too much of a nuisance to put right, the store will tell you to keep the extra.

Happened to me at a major retailer -I pointed it out but the sales assistant just smiled and said "computer says £19.99 so £19.99 it is !!!" I'd only paid £12.99 -they really can't be bothered to argue with the "system"

No. Why would you tell them, unless you wanted them to do something.
  • To be fair, shops can give you a discretionary additional discount if goods are marked or faulty, up to 20%. If the difference is within this bracket, the store will probably just tell you to keep it. Shop assistants can't do an awful lot about it when the till says something different to the label.

It's store credit, the money will work its way back to the store anyway, so I can't really see it as theft. In the strictest definition of the law, maybe, but it'd be more paperwork than it's worth!
  • If it's a small shop, like individually or family owned, I would definitely go back into the shop and let them know, show them your original receipt.
If it's a big store, like M&S, I would not. They rip us off so much and their suppliers, I'd keep quiet - wrong I know, but I would!
  • Hmmm .... it's a pity the receipt turned up. Maybe it will get lost again ...
