If you have a very bad credit history, have been declared bankrupt or have a record of fraud, you may find you won’t be accepted for even a basic bank account, and applying and being rejected could leave a negative mark on your credit report.

So if this is right, we can infer the chumps are even smacking you up with a credit check for a basic bank account. Banks and regulation: they certainly need some.

Assuming that's correct it appears a little irrelevant.

A credit check in the circumstances described isn't really going to make a lot of difference after all.

The point about all this debate is that a credit check is a check to see if you are good with credit. If you're not being offered any then there's no point in checking. Well, unless, it would appear, you live in the parallel universe in which the finance sector operates.

Yeah, banks definitely have no regulation at all.

Banks tend to do an identification and CIFAS check rather than a full credit search for BBAs - under the principles of reciprocity, they can't really do more as they also don't tend to report BBAs. Bankruptcy is public information.

I have no idea what the chip on your shoulder is.

Sigh. Why don't you just stick to the debate and desist from personal attacks?

My basic accounts with halifax, bank of scotland and nationwide were/are all reported to noddle (not ust the search but the account too). I believe they do this as you could have a unarranged overdraft

Yup. What that means is that a) you get a slight boost to your credit rating because of a row of 0s, and b) they will have performed a full search on you because they can't request such information without also providing it. They will have disregarded the results of anything but the public records and CIFAS checks.
