Hi there,
Wonder if anyone can help. I’ve been digging around and found people with similar problems – but they have only served to confuse me. Okay, here is the story.
I used to use onetel for dial up connection. I use Mulbery to access my work email – it worked fine. I used Outlook express to access another email account – for a charity that I am involved in. That charity has a website – and as part of the web hosting package we have an email account. (Does that make sense?)
Anyway, I then switched to BT broadband. I managed to get my work email (Mulbery) working fine. But I have not managed to get Outlook express working since I had broadband. I keep getting an error message:
The host 'mail.btinternet.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'mail.THECHARITY.org.uk', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D
I am now confused. Am I right that BT broadband my ISP? What should I be putting for POP3 and for SMTP? I have tried every combination, but without success.
Any advice anyone can give me would be great!
Many many thanks,

just had this same problem myself
go to add account
for pop put
mail.btinternet.com
and for SMTP the same
then go to tools
accounts
and double click the account that shows up for bt
then go to the advanced tab and in the out going it should say 25
and incoming pop should say 110
click apply and that should do it...
hope this works for you as in worked for me
Pls be nice to all MSer's

Thanks for that. Have tried it, but still no joy. If I only put in btinternet into the POP/SMTP how will it 'know' where to check for MYCHARITY emails?
thanks - and sorry for sounding dumb!0 -
still stuck - I'm going round in circles... Is there something else I need to change? (Perhaps on th Control Panel?) heeeeeelp!0

Sounds like the BT software has tried to "helpfully" add the details of your account with them to your Outlook Express.
Delete all the accounts in OE, then re-create your charity email address with the correct settings (pop.charity.org.uk or whatever they are).
If you're experiencing problems sending mail from that account then try connecting using port 26 instead of port 25, this is an alternate port on Linux machines which some hosts enable in case ISP's block port 25 due to high spam instances.0 -
sorry got called away from computer...honestly I don't know but try ringing bt on 150 and asking them what the settings are for pop3 and SMTP and see if they can run through it with you as that's what they are there for...it's just a glitch with windows mail I think as I tried all day yesterday no joy then today I noticed the 995 port so changed it to 110 port and hey presto it works...sorry I couldn't be of any more help...

Hi
Open Outlook express and select
Tools Menu
Then Accounts
Then the Mail Tab
If u have a account in there for your charity email select it then click the properties.
Then the Gerneral Tab
Mail servers = The Charity
Name = eg: The Name you want people who receive you email you want to see
Organizaton = Can Be left Blank
Email address = your charity email address
Reply address = Can Be left Blank
Then Select the Servers Tab
My incomming mail server is a = POP3 ( most likley)
Incomming Mail(POP3) = mail.THECHARITY.org.uk
Outgoing Mail(SMTP) = mail.THECHARITY.org.uk
Incomming mail server
Account Name = your charity email address (most likley) unless u know it
Password = Whatever your password is
If u do not know your Account Name and Password, u will need to contact the Charity email Administrator, he will also be able to confirm the Mail server addresses as well
Remmeber Password = Ticked
Log on using secure Password Authentication = Un Ticked
My Server requires authentication = Ticked ( Most do these day's)
Settings Button left set to there default settings
Normaly the rest of the Tabs do not need changing.
I have set up email on BT and they do not block Port 25 so u should be okay on that one.
Hope this helps a little0 -
Have you told your e-mail client that the SMTP server requires authentication? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Spoke to someone from BTinternet - call centre in India. He was brilliant Spent ages, until finally working out that my outlook express was corrupted. Having heard so many bad stories re call centres workers in India, thought I should post such a positive result!
Many thanks to everyone here for their advice!0
