Perhaps you need to emphasise that it is a fairly urgent problem: I know that if it was me (heck, maybe it will be when we move again in 4 weeks) I would not be able to function 24 hours without an oven, let alone a week. It is a fairly basic thing.

We asked them to try and get it fixed this week, because we've not yet moved in "fully" as it were - we're overlapping the end of our old rent with the start of our new one, so we won't be actually living in the new house until the weekend. But they said they'd definitely get it sorted before we move in fully. I think it's in their interest to get it sorted as soon as possible, especially if it was their own electrician who caused the problem in the first place. ;)

The agency has been very good so far (fingers crossed!) - still working on it at 7pm last night even. :)

Oven has been fixed :D outside lights were tripping it, so they've been disconnected - which isn't ideal but rather that than the oven not working! So landlords are going to be looking at a quote to fix them but at least now we can cook :)
  • Ah... mystery solved - happy cooking :)

So someone added the outside lights to the cooker circuit?

I'd be asking for a proper check on the whole electric set up.

I know, it is all a bit strange to be honest! - my OH has checked over the work they did yesterday and the wiring seems to be straightened out now, it seems that the outside lights were tripping all the RCD (?) circuits, so not sure if they were wired into the cooker circuit or something else. For now we're assured it's all safe, though. The electrics were supposedly checked over fully before we moved in - the letting agents do a full electricity & gas safety check before tenants move in - so I'm not sure how this problem was missed first time around. It doesn't inspire confidence!

Thank you everyone for advice & comments :)

cheer up, imagine if you'd bought it then discovered the wiring was useless!
