Changing vehicle ownership..or forgetting to do so
I purchased a car about a year ago and haven't sent off the UK Registration certificate yet. I'm about to do it but not sure of the best way to go about it.
There are a few anomalies with the details:
I bought the car from a used car dealer (forecourt, garage, office, respectable looking place) in Feb 2016, The current owner details were completed and signed in 2014 (2 years prior) and the second part was half completed but never finished or sent away.
The V5C was similarly completed by the seller in 2014 but not filled out by the dealership.
So, to the best of my knowledge the car is still owned by someone who sold it in 2014.
How should i go about completing the form? I've had no problem taxing or insuring it this year but would prefer to sort this before getting next years tax and insurance.
Thanks
Edit: basically, should I just complete it as if i bought the car today, back-date it to when I did get the car (fine?), or any other suggestions.

So you've not had tax in that time?0

I've had no problem taxing the car or insuring it. I just filled out the details on the tax website and it went through. If i check the tax status online it is still taxed until march.0

AFIK If you do it as if you got it today they will cancel the tax and refund to the previous owner. You will then have to retax.
I'm happy to be corrected if wrong.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
It's owned by you, however registered in there name.
It's the sellers responsibility to complete the V5 and hand over the Green Slip bit. That slip can be used to tax the car.
Send off the V5, back date it.. it's up to you. Just sign the new keeper bit with today's date...It's up to you0 -

But if the car wasnt in your name then as far I as I am aware you haven't been taxing it - you have been taxing it for the previous owner not yourself. if you change the V5 now (as others have said) the tax will be cancelled and any refund given to the previous owner.
Just wondering though how you have managed to tax and insure it if it isnt in your name?0 -

Insurance is easy, have your company asked to see your V5?0 -

I think you're right. If the OP isn't going to backdate then might as well wait until the end of the month so they tax again as of Feb.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
You might be right about it not being taxed in my name, but as for completing the document online I just added a 1 to the start of the Doc. Ref. No. at the bottom of the UK Registration Certificate. Insurers never requested any details from the certificate or V5C. I'm going to send it away with at the beginning of next month to get the most out of the current road tax.
Thanks for the responses! I'll give an update to the thread if anything is other than plain sailing.0 -
This just sounds so unlikely.0

If your being serious then why would you bother sending the V5C away in the post?, just change the keeper online it's much easier.0
