power screwdriver

Hi all,
I’m after some kind of power screwdriver just to do stuff like building flatpack furniture, odd jobs in the garden, screwing trellis etc. I have a half-decent mains drill for any serious drilling already.
Is something like this any good for what I want it for?
http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/black-decker-3-6v-li-ion-screwdriver?istCompanyId=bf3344d9-83f5-4abd-b69a-da131f7567d1&istItemId=qliqlpaaa&istBid=tzxp&gclid=CNmP4bmJzNECFdEy0wodPu4Efw

Or do I really need to spend a bit more and get an impact driver?

Thanks

Those little drivers are a complete waste of money; they will generally just about put a screw in a pre-drilled hole - at best.

If you're planning long-term, you places like screwfix often have the 4mah bosch models on offer. You're talking more like £100, but they're worth it - I have two!
  • I have one of these, bought it in the sale so paid about half what there asking now and it's an excellent bit of kit, should do all that you want.

I've got one of these, seems adequate for any jobs I do that don't require my Makita SDS.

We have 2 drills - one corded, hammer drill function - mostly used for big jobs, making a dent in our solid stone walls.
The other is a black and decker cordless drill with hammer drill function. We turn off the hammer drill for small jobs - but it makes putting IKEA furniture together a piece of cake. Charges, long battery life, powerful and light.

I have to agree with the previous posters - those little power screwdrivers are not much cop for anything other than very lightweight work. If you're doing a lot of screwing ( stop sniggering at the back !! ), then a decent cordless drill is a very worthwhile investment. You'll be looking at around the £100 mark for a decent 18 or 20 volt model with a Li-on battery, but I wouldn't be without mine. Having had several cheaper ones with NiCad batteries that were useless, I took the plunge and splashed out £99 on a decent one, I've had it for years now with no problems at all. Plus, of course, it can be used for ( surprisingly heavy-duty ) drilling.

An alternative to think about - I've also got one of these :

I really can't fault it, and it's so much more versatile than a "normal" screwdriver. Sure, it's not a power driver, but it's a fraction of the price, and can make surprisingly light work of medium-sized jobs. Something to think about maybe ?

    This one is priced well...http://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-tti699com-18v-1-5ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill/4908p

Obviously not professional quality but has 2 lithium-ion batteries, it's cheap and is perfectly satisfactory for DIY work.

When I repaired washing machines for a living I had a cheap Black & Decker electric screwdriver & it was fine. It lasted all day on a charge & I used it for years with no problem. Having said that, good combi drills like that linked to above are so cheap now you may as well buy one.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Some of the Titan stuff that Screwfix sell are really good quality, have a look at something like this...

    [EDIT]

Sorry, didnt read all the replies and just noticed someone has already posted this... so I add my vote to that!
  • definitely recommend getting one that comes with two batteries,.... I built some decking last summer and while one was charging i was using the other and just kept swapping over, very handy

The advantage of the smaller format is they work in places a drill driver won't fit.

For flat pack plenty of them will speed up the job.

If sticking 2" into solids get something more decent and tougher stuff impact.

There is no one size fits all in the screwing game.
