Criss Cross Lease Buildings Insurance

I bought my house (first time buyer so new to all of this) as a ground floor flat converted from a terraced house back in July 2016.
At the time my mortgage broker explained to me that it was on a criss cross lease, and when the lease expired at the end of 2016, I would need to renew the lease as an entire house, splitting the cost between the upstairs flat. When the time came to renew, I contacted the company (Countrywide) the house was insured with and they basically told me that the insurance had been done incorrectly, as though it were only a two bed flat (so ignoring the criss cross lease) and that it would have been null and void had I have needed to make a claim. They also told me that they would be unable to insure my house and that I need to go to a specialist insurance company.
I'm a bit concerned now, as I'm currently without insurance on my property but google searches and various enquiries all seem to draw a blank.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there a property company that will cover a criss cross lease? Would it have to be in joint names with the upstairs flat? (Which would be three in total: myself and the two joint owners of the upstairs property.)
Thanks in advance for any help!
