I have a cheap raised bed that i fill with topsoil for my four.

They use it a lot so it keeps the neighbours happy. Just keep a trowel to dig up any mess to put in the bin.

Thanks but I rather they use the litter box and not the garden (mine or neighbours) to be honest so trying to find a solution that will provide cover for the litter trays preventing rain/moisture getting into the litter.

At the moment they go out for ages but come back home to go to toilet as as they always did and then go out again LOL
  • Cats feel at their most vulnerable when toileting so that's probably the reason they are still coming indoors to do it. I've always made litter trays available (inside) for my 4 cats but they now go exclusively in the garden whether I want them to or not. The joys of cat ownership :)

Could you put a waterproof cover over Zara's crate and put the trays in there, obviously if she's not using it atm.

We have a sheltered area outside the back door. Its quite difficult to explain but there was an outside toilet on the left which now houses the washing machine and tumble drier - there is still a door which I keep closed. On the right is the garage door. Above is a bit like a porch so its not open to the elements. To the front is the path round the side of the house. My husband has put chicken wire in the opening from floor to ceiling so other cats/rats/foxes can't get in or our cats get out but there is still light. A piece of chipboard has been put up directly in front of the litter tray to shelter it from rain and the elements. It is ideal because the cats like the privacy and security and there is no smell in the house. We have a microchip catflap in the back door so that the cats can get out there without having to ask.

The only problem is cleaning the tray in the winter is a cold task. I do it daily. However, I haven't had any problem with flies in the summer. I suppose I do clean it out more frequently in the summer (twice daily). Only one of my cats goes outside but her toilet is in the house, like ours.

If you know someone handy, could you erect a small structure near the house with chipboard and chicken wire and put the litter tray inside it. Entry would be via a microchip cat flap (if they are microchipped.)
The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best

Zara does not have a crate any more - she loved hers when she was a puppy but after so many surgeries her memories of a crate are not good.

Boys still run back in for the toilet then go right out again - no shelter as such outside so really need a very big plastic type of sealed container .. will wait for spring though as right now that rain (and mud from a very neglected garden) drives me insane...

There was a kiddie play tent on the Grab It board recently, that might work.

Not sure if you are still looking but I can recommend the Marchioro hooded litter trays. We have two and they are bigger than average trays. We bought them to get the cats used to going outside, which worked, but they are now back inside as we have a housebound cat. They don't seem to be many available anymore but did find one on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Marchioro-Freecat-Maxi-Litter-Box-AND-40L-Benek-Corn-Cat-Natural-Clumping-Litter-/152430794441?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

Thanks , I think I have found a solution though xx

The problem now is that none of my boys want to go out at all - the weather is pretty awful.

Funny as when we lived in a flat with n garden they wanted to go out all the time and now the back door open and all 4 on sofas.. cats huh?

Ah yes it is cold out there and they are older now. Same with my cats too. Glad you found a solution.
