BT Moving direct debit date

So I am with BT for phone and broadband, my account has been set up so that my direct debit is taken out on the 1st of each month, happy days. However for my January direct debit they tried to take it out on the 9th, then again on the 24th, both times there was no money left in the account so I got charged from my bank for an unpaid transaction fee (i'm in a bit of debt trouble, my account is set up so that priority direct debits leave on the 1st, then paying off cards etc leave on the 5th. makes sure that all of my priority bills get paid first).
My question is am I able to claim back the cost of the missed payment fee's that I have from the bank from BT as for no part of my own they tried to take the money over a week later.
N.B I realize we had a number of bank holidays over Christmas but all of my other bills that get paid on the 1st were all paid on the 2nd (this still works with my 1st vs 5th for priority bills).
Thanks in advance
Simon

Not a scooby's I'd have thought. I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling but it's not even as if they took it early (which can happen), I'm afraid it's entirely your responsibility to ensure that there's money to cover your DD's.
If you speak nicely to the bank they may waive/refund the charges but BT would just (rightly) shrug and say it's not their fault.0 -
So why was the money not there 9 days after the target date of 1st...? They were taking it late, sure, but no reason for the funds to have disappeared. The attempt at retaking the amount 2 weeks later is pretty normal - as their first attempt failed. Your lucky Service wasn't automatically stopped and a fee added to reconnect!0
