Nope- the wee blue circle is running round when the mouse goes into the taskbar area but nothing happens. When I move the mouse up into the desktop area the blue circle vanishes but nothing happens.0

You need to ensure that the laptop IS fully updated. Also make sure the laptop is RESTARTED rather than shutdown and started (as a "shutdown" may be a hibernation); and manually run windows update to confirm its updated...it'll work in the end. (control-alt-del may be needed to get to the restart option).0

Cont/alt/delete didnt work either. Ended up phoning John Lewis techie help desk and got told just to switch it off lol. Was terrified, but it came on again ok - new items on the taskbar though. Thanks everybody0

Fixed my Jeep Wrangler like that a few weeks ago.
They have a potential issue with what they call the totally integrated power module (TIPM), it's an integral part of the main fusebox.
Symptoms vary across different models of Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and other US cars that use it.
Mine was an intermittent single wipe of the wipers when I put the right hand indicator on, wipers and indicators not even on the same stalk.
Last week though when I fired it up all the lights and the wipers were on and I couldn't turn them off. Also the indicators weren't working at all.
After the initial panic when the brain started working again I decided, like you, that as with all tech that has a processor of any sort in it a re-boot was in order.
I disconnected the battery for 20secs and everything is back to normal, even the intermittent wipe has gone. All I had to do was reset the clock to the correct time.
I have also popped a 10mm ring spanner in the glove box in case another re-boot is required. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
