Turned down for bank account but credit rating fine. Any ideas?

It can be due to a multiple of factors e.g. your address particularly if its a flat and the format can be presented in different ways with the credit reference agencies.

When I applied for FD and M&S current accounts they had terrible trouble verifying me identity wise despite me having been an HSBC current account customer for over 20 years (10 at my current address)!

Why not try Nationwide or TSB - high interest current accounts with plenty of branches unlike FD who have none (except HSBC branches for paying only). Or one of the cashback providers. If you get referred by an existing customer with Nationwide you and they get £100 - assuming you switch in at least two direct debits.

If you have a car and go travelling abroad regularly the Nationwide flex plus account is great - costs £10 a month but you earn 3% interest on balances up to £2,500 which funds nearly half the fee. You also get breakdown cover, and world wide travel insurance and mobile phone insurance plus free extended warranty on purchases and free cash withdrawals abroad.
