hi all.after successfully receiving back my new passport from completing the online application, you have to sign it yourself.my question is and it's not been answered conclusively by the passport office , when you sign on the line does it only have to be on the line ? I signed it without even thinking and some letters have gone under the line .there was no indication given that the signature must only be on the line but I'm worried that if it's wrong I will not be allowed travel .I've contacted the passport office several times and been given different answers every time .many thanks for any advice .

I'd say don't worry about it. It sounds like a line just to indicate where you sign, not a box for data entry on a form where it has to be totally inside the borders. The machine readable features of your passport are used at border controls, not the signature.Evolution, not revolution0

Its been a few years but I was pretty sure that there is a box that you must sign in and the notes make it clear that no part of your signature must touch the sides of the box with the whole signature being inside the box.0

You should have had an email giving you instructions on how to sign after receiving your passport
The sign after receipt passport is for those who have used the online channel where you upload your photo and any correspondence is done by email. The signature for the earlier ones when it was trialled was taken fro the old passport .
If you have applied using the hand written form or online where you print off the declaration and sign it, your signature will be replicated onto the passport0
