What will happen if you refuse to do the work experience?

Yes it is unfair that rather than paying someone to do a job the company are able to get free labour from the job centre, but if you don't accept it your benefits will likely be sanctioned.

Yh I mean the woman said something like "It would be better to get you to do it rather than them getting a temp in" which made me think hang on, if I don't do this then they'll get a temp in which means they'll be paid right? I am already doing work experience in the city centre which I wouldn't mind if I did have to work in the dark it is just being in an area where there is nothing and it being dark.

Maybe what she meant by that was that it would be better for YOU personally to do it and gaining the experience than somebody else who neither of you know.

Nothing will happen. The OP said she is already doing work experience in the city centre. If anything, this one-week stint in a bad area would interrupt her existing work experience and they might decide not to have her back. If it's working for you, don't rock the boat.

Also, get a personal alarm and find out how to use it. Ask the jobcentre if they can refer you for any courses on Personal Safety.
