Where can I warn people about mechanics?

Options
Hi,

Where would I be able to leave a message for people when it comes to mechanics/garages?
I was recently quoted over £700 for a job but, after seeking a second opinion, only paid £25 elsewhere!
I fear that other people would just pay the quoted price.
I had already handed over £100 for a separate job that the mechanics had 'found' before the major £700 quote.

Thanks

Facebook would make sure your circle were warned.

Trading Standards if you feel there was a deliberate attempt to con you out of £700

Any trade body they are members of.

Don't worry about it and move on, surely you had a breakdown of the quotes.

Did the "Praise, Vent and Warnings" forum here not catch your eye..?

Hmm, well you need to know exactly what the first garage were doing before jumping to any rash conclusions here. I know garages who would absolutely not weld an exhaust as they don't feel such work is guaranteed to last (with fair reasoning). As such, that job will cost upwards of £100, if not more. Other garages will happily weld an exhaust for little more than £20 and a coffee. Don't expect the work to be guaranteed though.
  • Not unknown. Ford main dealer quoted a couple of grand for new injectors and possible turbo replacement. Little guy down a back street replaced the glow-plugs. Cost £90. To lay bare the cheek of Ford, I was charged, as everybody is, £45 for the diagnostics. Took the back street mechanic's receipt back to Ford who said "These things happen." Main dealers are designed to rip you off, one no different than the others. Suck in their breath and puff out their chest before giving you the price in a half whisper of wonderment.

They fixed a £700 problem for £25? I smell BS.

What an unintelligent post. Do you mean all mechanics and all garages or would you like to be more specific. To class everyone the same is really irresponsible.

I sort of agree, perhaps the 1st garage opted to replace the part fully, where as the 2nd place just done a temporary make good, especially at the £25 price.

I'm perfectly happy with my local Ford main dealer. Been taking my car there for quite a few years now, never been ripped off.

My friend on the other hand has been consistently robbed blind by backstreet mechanics.

It's possible, take something like plastic headlamps where the lenses have clouded over, a new pair of headlamps £700, a bit of time wet sanding and polishing the existing ones £25.

It's unfair to describe it as a rip off as the prices are for two totally different methods of repair, one will last for years, the other for months.
