How long does the Aso Fire Festival last?

Day-long festival not enough to quench your thirst for flames? Serious fire-lovers are advised to head down to Kumamoto in Kyushu in spring-time during the month-long Aso Fire Festival. It’s held near well-known Mt. Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan, which certainly adds an extra frisson of excitement to proceedings.

Which is Japan's most sacred shrine?

Visiting temple and shrine laden Kyoto, or seeing some of Japan's more rural, majestic monuments can be one of the most satisfying experiences when visiting Japan. The 'most sacred' of Japan's shrines is Ise Jingu, in Mie Prefecture, set in amongst a sacred, peaceful forest.

  • What is the average water temperature in an Onsen?

    2. Once in the bathing area, you will rinse off and wash before getting into the tub. This is important as it allows you to get used to the hot temperature and also keeps the bath water clean for other bathers. The water may feel a little too hot for those not used to it, as it's around 40°C. Also, don't dive or jump into the tub.

    Where are these gardens located?

The southern island of Kyushu is dotted with volcanoes and consequently is a hot spring paradise. Finnair flies directly from its hub in Helsinki to Fukuoka, with affordable flight prices. The fairytale like tunnels of Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushuare a must see whilst you're journeying around this island, as are the forest trails of Yakushima island, where you can see some of the world's oldest cedar trees.

Where else can you kayak in Japan?

Japan is surrounded by ocean, and lined with rivers and waterways. Kayaking and rafting the waters of Japan will give you a completely different perspective of the countryside.
Up north in Niseko (Hokkaido), take to the rafts as the snow melts and floods the rivers in spring. For something a little less challenging, raft or kayak the rivers in summer when the water is much calmer.
How about rafting the biggest river in Japan? For world-class rafting, head to the Tone River in the Minakami region of Gunma prefecture. From April to June the river provides consistent grade four rapids for over twelve kilometres.
Kayak on Lake Aoki or navigate the rivers in Hakuba (Nagano). Alternatively, you may like to challenge yourself to the grade two rapids of nearbyHime River.

How many miles are there between Tokyo and Oze?

Oze National Park is around 150 miles north of Tokyo, and is an excellent hiking destination for outdoor fans not keen on big hills. Walk through the marshland with mountains covered in autumn leaves looming in the distance

  • How high is Mount Koma?

The Central Alps are synonymous with the Kiso Mountains that stretch from the southwestern part of Nagano to the border of Gifu and Aichi. The principal peak that runs from northeast to southwest for 80 kilometres is the 2,956-metre-high Mt. Koma (also known as Mt. Kiso Koma-ga-take), and it has many points worthy of note, including the Nou Pond, a treasure box of rare species of flowers situated in the northeastern part of the summit, as well as a part of the slope on the southeast called the Senjojiki Cirque that was scooped out by a glacier. The mountain range consists of 2,000-metre-high mountains, but it is relatively easy to climb, and day trips to the area are possible as well.

  • How high are the Nachi Falls?

The Kumano region in Wakayama is home to some of Japan’s most magnificent natural monuments, no fewer than 4 of which are introduced in the video. Nachi Falls is recognised as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls due to its height and the beauty of its single uninterrupted drop - astonishingly, around a ton of water flows from its 133-metre height every single second.

What does the rock on cliff faces resemble?

The sheer cliff faces lining Takechiho Gorge resemble dragon scales in the way the rock has twisted and formed.

What was the name of the pirate group?

Imabari in Ehime prefecture, and Onomichi in Hiroshima, along with various other tourism associations are working in unison to promote the historic legacy of the ‘Murakami Kaizoku’ – the group of pirates who controlled the waters of the Seto Inland Sea between 14th and 16th century. Alongside legal activities such as fishing and salt making, the pirates controlled some of the key sea routes into the country, with underhand money-making tactics including escorting vessels to ensure safe passage (at a fee), operating toll barriers and hijacking ships.
