How to find out whether an email had been viewed?

I know that many commercial bulk sending email systems can monitor whether an email had been viewed or clicked on etc.
I basically want to be able to know whether an email I send to someone is viewed - preferably without the recipient knowing. (pretty much same as the commercial version, but made for single email use)
Anyone knows how this can be done?
Thanks

MSGTAG the free version does let the recipient know that you know they have opened it, you would need to pay for MSGTAG Plus if you want the secrecy.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
I use ippimail email which lets me add receipts and make money for charity with my emails. There may be a cleverer way to do it though

Why would you want to hide the fact that you'd had a return receipt?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -

outlook has this facility on it - the receipient if they are using a pop or smtp server email addres wpould be able to let you know wether they have read it or not
if they have a web emaila dress like hotmail or yahoo you would nt be able to tell in any event0 -
the outlook facility is pants though, you get a pop up box saying the sender wants a read receipt and gives you the option to send one or not.0

I suspect that someone managed to hack into my email and is reading my messages, therefore I was planning to use the "message viewed" facility on an email that I would send to myself. ..it should work, i think!
Would I be able to see the IP address of the viewing email client?
Also, on another matter, if my emails are FWDed, is there a way of tracing this? (looking at MSGTAG, it doesn't have this facility)0 -

If it is an ISP account then change your password.0 -
it's a bit more complex than that irnbru, but thanks for the advice.
I would be most grateful for any other info on the facility of finding out if my emails have been viewed and any possible IP tracking.0 -

Not necessarily. It depends on the setting. If you set Outlook to send a read receipt automatically when requested, it does just that and doesn't give you the opportunity to agree or otherwise to individual requests.0 -

But you are not in control of someone else's settings!
