Family member has taken out loans in my name! What can I do?

Hi everyone,

I received a letter in the post from a company called debt managers. When I called them to find out what it was for they informed me it was a store card debt of £150. I had no idea what this was until they gave me the email address linked to the account which is a close family members. So it turns out this family member has taken out store cards and god knows what else in my name but using their address and email meaning that I'm none the wiser until a debt management company starts chasing me! In a bit of a pickle here... the debt company said that he store card company won't see this as fraud but as a civil matter as it is a family member. How do I Broach this with the family member!? And what if there is lods more that I am as yet unaware of!

Thanks!!!

  • I would go to the Police. It is fraud and in my experience (with my dd) it is only taking a hard line that nips this kind of stuff in the bud

I think you have to discuss it with them promptly - they clearly haven't thought of the implications for you in this

    Hi,

It's not a debt management company, it's a debt collection agency that's contacted you.

You should report it here :

    http://www.actionfraud.police.uk

You should also make your family member aware that the game is up.

I think you can block further attempts at taking out credit in your name also.

It really doesn't matter that this is a family member or not... it's fraud. Ignore what the debt collection companies tell you - they both hear this as a false excuse AND also don't care if it's true. What matters to them is getting paid. They will pursue someone with the same name for a debt if they think they will pay up!

Report it and go on your credit files and mark any activity on all 3 that you know is fraudulent as such. You can set a marker on there to stop further credit being granted without extra checks. Good luck

  • Playing devil's advocate... if you have the money don't rule out paying it back, and limiting the harm to your credit file. Depending on your family culture, involving the police might be seen as not the done thing.

And the vaults are stuffed with silver,

If family member applied under your name with THEIR address and email, how did they track you down for this debt?

    Just wondered.

I think we all know the answer to that one!
  • Wouldn't that be via the electoral roll?

Well I have my thoughts on the matter. Maybe all family members live at the same address?

But I honestly don't know the answer! Please please say, I won't sleep otherwise with the mystery of it all.
  • Just fyi no I have never lived at their address. The letter was sent to my address over 80 miles away.
