I have a window that needs to be changed (not the one in the picture), I think the windows are old! Is the metal bar below the window a trickle vent? They are on all my windows and look really ugly! If i replace the window can this be moved to the top? which should hopefully look a bit less noticeable!

  • Trickle vents are usually in the frame of the sash

You could just change the sealed unit, that vent is in the glass portion. Windows like that are sometimes single glazed in a double glazing frame. If that's the case, to change to double glazing you would need the right beading as the single glazing stuff is much too large.

If it is double glazed already and therefore easy to change for that size (bathroom?) window two new frosted sealed units would be about £60 tops.

The frames look in excellent condition btw, if that is one of your windows.

Yes that is my window and is in the downstairs bathroom. Is there a reason why they have put the vent in the glass portion? It looks really odd and not something i have seen before.

Obviously will leave be if this cannot be easily changed...

Thanks for the replies by the way :)
  • a lot of councils do it this way

As BWF suggested they are normally part of the frame, however, in your case the reveal (the return part of the wall that joins to where your window frame is) is very thick and has obscured most of the frame - hence a trickle vent could not be fitted into the frame and has been added as part of the glass opening.
I would suggest that one could be fitted into the top light (opener) as part of the opening window frame when you decide to replace.

Magic thanks! The house is ex council (years ago) so would explain why they went down that route. The window that need sorting has quiet a bit of moisture inside the unit, i guess from what was suggested before i could just get this unit replaced rather than the whole window replaced... I also have a problem with the front bedroom window which has a crack in the glass (on the inside), On the same window they have drilled a hole in the frame to get the the BT line through! mental really. BT are coming next week to move the socket to a better location.

On a different note, there are other houses on the street that have much nicer looking windows (without the massive trickle vent). Would it have been cheaper to put the vent in the glass portion i wonder?

I've never seen a vent in the glass on double glazing, I know its a PVCu frame but the ones with vents in that I have seen have all been singe glazed. Changed one like the one in your picture recently at a house where every other window was double glazed, even the outhouse, yet the bathroom was single glazed.
