Do I need business insurance to claim milage for a training course.

Hi all.
I have to go on a 2 week training course. Usually I would have no issue in getting a milage payment of 40p a mile but ive been told I now need business milage policy by my company. My vehicle is only driven to a training centre and home. Is this not covered under commuting.
Thanks
Jon

Commuting usually covers going to your one usual place of work.
Try calling your insurers, adding business cover isn't normally expensive, often free.0 -
as already said, most policy state commuting is "to and from a permanent place of work"
I have business cover on my insurance, cost about£10/year. Worth it for the peace of mind, though i rarely use my car for work.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

Commuting cover usually only covers you for commuting to a single, regular place of work or study. If you're travelling to somewhere other than your regular workplace in connection with your job then yes you need business cover. Essentially, if you can claim mileage then it's business use.
In my own experience the extra cost of insuring my car for business use is negligible (some insurers, like Direct Line, actually include it as standard). So while I don't use my car for business regularly I've always added it anyway on the off-chance that I need to drive to a training day or similar. If it does cost a bit extra, that's supposed to be factored into the 40p/mile allowance.0 -
Speak to your insurance company, they maybe happy that for the duration of the course that is your place of work. However if they can charge you either an admin fee or increase your premium they'll probably say you need business insurance.
Will work want you to produce a certificate?0 -
I asked for business cover and got it added on FOC (only 5k miles though).0

If you've been doing this previously I'm surprised your employer hasn't insisted on business use before now.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

(You need business cover, and will be driving uninsured if you don't!)0 -
I added business use to my policy a couple of years. Made no difference to the premium, but Churchill levied an admin charge. Think it was about £140

ask your employer to provide you with a pool car or a hire car.
If you have an accident without business class insurance then your not covered.0
