Can I suggest some gentle exfoliation.

Gatineau Gommage (they do an aging skin one - I've used it!) is a very gentle exfoliator.

QVC isn't usually the cheapest supplier, but you try it risk free for a month & return for a full refund if you're not happy. So it's a really safe bet for trying new things.

I haven't tried this mask yet, but people really rave about it.
A lot of people use it as a very rich night cream.
  • The only cream that works for me is St Kitts Herbery Echinacea Cream.

It's pricey but you don't need to use much. The borage cream they have is great as well.
  • Vaseline or Nivea are always my choice! They have great products and cheap price :)
  • Have you ever tried it????

I HAVE! It does not sink into the skin and is very poor at moisturising the skin. I would not say that my skin was all that dry, far better than it was in the past but coconut oil is not sufficient even when my skin is only moderately dry with a very small amount of flaky skin. I still would not use it even in those conditions. For anything much worse I would not even consider it.

You obviously would believe anything posted by anyone capable of posting to the web and believe it to be true. A lot of the information on the www about coconut oil is inaccurate and untrue....purely marketing hype. I tried it myself and what I stated is what I found.

There are far better oils than coconut oil for the skin.

I don't believe everything I read, not at all. I based my answer on personal experience.

When people stop using creams and lotions on their faces, the skin will go through an adjustment period and break outs can occur, but once settled into a new skin care regime the coconut oil is beneficial and will sink into the skin no problem.

It is used extensively in tropical regions as skin care.

Wash with nothing but warm water, then apply a small amount of coconut oil.
Equally important is a whole foods diet.

If using olive oil, I recommend a cold pressed virgin oil. The heating process for commercially produced oil isn't the best for the quality of the resulting oil.
  • Hi all,
I love vitamin E oil, I use it as a moisturizer and for scars. A friend of mine recommended me this oil for scars, and I'm happy to see that I can use it for different skin problems.
  • I love Aveeno - it's amazing on dry skin without being too thick. Some moisturisers like Nivea make me feel like my skin is really clogged up.

    Hi there

Can anyone recommend a facial wash and moisturiser for very dry flaky skin?

Have googled but it brings up so many products it's difficult to know which one to go with, (and they're all so expensive)!

Am going through the menopause which could be a cause? Have been to doctor about it but they were no help.

I'm now starting to get sores around the side of my face, which doesn't look very good.

    What's worked for you?

    Please help! :(
Not due to menopause myself but I used to get flakey dry skin on my t-zone. It was due to my skin not having enough moisture (rather than dehydrated- it was also dehydrated but the flakey skin was due to it being dry not the dehydration; they are not the same thing).

I solved it by taking a two-prong approach, firstly to get rid of any dead skin (the flakey stuff) as it would prevent any moisturiser getting to the live skin (once skin is dead it's dead, applying moisturiser to it won't bring it back to life, it needs to go). I did this with an exfoliator.
There are two types of exfoliation you can do. Either a physical type (the grainey stuff you rub on your skin a few times a week) or a chemical exfoliator (things like acids which tend to be able to get further into your skin and can be used daily in some cases). The physical stuff IME doesn't work for me as well as the chemical stuff.

Assuming your skin is not sensitive, you could use a glycolic acid. Pixi, The Ordinary, Glossier, Paula's Choice ...all make them and there are no doubt many others. Use every other day to begin with. BUT if your skin is sensitive you would be better suited to a lactic acid. The Ordinary make two types; 5% and 10%, obviously one is milder than the other. If your skin is really not sensitive and can handle it, you could do both of the above steps (glycolic, wait 15 mins then the lactic acid.). Do this every night before the next step (don't do the acid thing in the morning).

Once you have the above in your routine, then you can look at putting back some moisture. Your key componants are hyaluronic acid and you'd be looking for products suitable for dry skin, not so much aging or spots or exfoliation, at the moment your main focus should be moisture. If you can find a serum with hyaluronic acid in (Clinique, Indeed Labs, Hylamide, The Ordinary, and if your not someone who reacts to silicons, Neutrogena and Garnier also have a moisture range). You can use a serum and follow with a moisturiser for maximum results but even if you just stuck to one or the other you'd be doing good.

In the morning, you need to cleanse well as your skin will have debris you need it to shed. You're not going to see bits of skin or flakes running into the skin or anything but bit by but you should notice things clear up.

I used to get dry flakey skin every winter without fail but since starting to use a hyaluronic acid serum and then incorporating chemical exfoliation (I used lactic acid then a month later added a glycolic acid in addition) I've not had my dry skin return this year for the first year in over a decade. Nothing else changed but my skincare routine.
  • I had the same problem because of the dirty water in the shower...Or because of the cold weather...Try to use some creamy and fat ointments...
