Very dry flaky skin on face!

Hi there

Can anyone recommend a facial wash and moisturiser for very dry flaky skin?

Have googled but it brings up so many products it's difficult to know which one to go with, (and they're all so expensive)!

Am going through the menopause which could be a cause? Have been to doctor about it but they were no help.

I'm now starting to get sores around the side of my face, which doesn't look very good.

What's worked for you?

Please help! :(

  • Not from my personal experience but I know a lot of people going through the menopause who have suffered the same thing and the one thing that has worked for practically all of them is Vichy products. There is a particular range of their products that targets menopausal skin, I'd have a look on their website and then shop around. I think Essentual have about 30% off at the moment plus there prices aren't crazy and well worth every penny. Vichy is usually on offer somewhere, so its worth shopping around.

    Hope that helps :)

It's not a face cream but have you tried the Nivea that comes in a white pot/ tube?Nivea soft I think it is called. I used to use clinque but in winter I would get dry sore patches. I would then steal my mum's Nivea which sorted it out. Now I still use it and have no problems. I lather it on in winter but use more sparingly in summer.

Edit: My mum still uses it and she is experiencing the menopause too.

In cold weather my skin starts to flake like pastry but this moisturiser is brilliant and really cheap

Instead of facewash you might want to try Micellar water, it cleanses without drying your skin out.

My face is very dry, reactive and allergy-prone. Glycerin (or glycerine, glycerol) is the only moisturiser I use now, applied straight onto wet skin after washing. It doesn't clog pores or leave a shine when towel-dried. A 200 ml bottle from Boots is around £1.30. A 5 litre bottle is about £15 online. Wish I'd known about it decades ago!

Lots of good suggestions above, but I would add:-

Stop using facewash, there are exceptions, but normally too drying. Replace with a cream cleanser or balm and take off with flannel and warm water, Superdrug own Vit E one is good and often on 2 for 1 or some offer or another. Secondly are you getting enough good oils in your diet? avocado, certain nuts and fish oils. Oily fish twice a week and probably for the moment a good quality Omega mix, you tend to get what you pay for in terms of quality with Omegas. (When I remember I take 2 per day of Lamberts OracOmega®
High strength fish oil plus 2,500 ORAC antioxidant units from plant extracts. I buy from my Osteopath's office, so don't have to pay postage. (check with doctors if taking blood thinning/asprin products). No affiliation, good health food store will be able to offer other products.
