Hard Disk Data Reovery

Hi,

Has anybody had any success with companies offering HD data recovery. I've dropped a 2TB WD MyBook external USB drive - this was my backup for kids photos and music, so I'd like to get them back if its feasible.

I've pulled the drive out of the case and tried to mount it as a normal SATA drive but the BIOS doesn't find it.

I've done a web search and found that its a minefield trying to find reputable companies.

I'm up in Sheffield and have a quote from R3 Data Recovery (up to £550 if it has mechanical damage) - Anybody used these guys or have any recommendations of other companies ?

thanks

Wayne

Just search this Techie forum (probably for the word recovery ... this question has been asked a few times. Find other threads and you'll see the recommendations.

You will NOT find a better , more reliable, professional service
Ring them, speak to the professor and you will see what i mean ..

    I concur.
Although my friends were too mean to fork out when I spoke to him (on their behalf), he did certainly sound most professional and competent.

Was it your only copy of those files?

If yes, then it wasn't a backup. I don't wish to sound harsh.

If you do have other copies then it will be far cheaper to buy a new external drive than it will be to attempt recovery of the files on the dropped drive.

Losing your only copy of files like this is a hard lesson to learn. In future you should make sure that you have at least two separate copies of valuable data.

(I have no connection with the product or with Steve Gibson - he is a very knowledgeable person on both security and on hard disk data structures and recovery, and the programme has been used by many people for many years.)

Steve Gibson has been outed as a snake oil salesman many many times over the last 20 odd years yet for some reason people still seem to put value in what he says.

As above, if it's only the backup you've lost then just get a new backup drive and backup the photos and music again.

It'll be much cheaper to buy a new drive than to get a damaged one repaired.

You are completely right. Don't know what I was thinking. I've deleted my post.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will give this guy a ring - their web site looks decent and says the right kind of things. Fingers crossed.

And to the other question asked? Is this your ONLY copy of the data? (Your OP says it is a backup - a backup doesn't need expensive data recovery services).
