  • Of course they can. They can choose to do business with whomever they like. Why would you think otherwise?

Good thing the OP clarified who is offering this bank account as I thought I must have missed the announcement that Mitchells & Butlers had moved out of brewing and into banking!

Banks really should be better at the account opening process than this.

Far too many threads where people say they were accepted for an account/credit card etc, even to the point of receiving the debit/credit card, and then having the facility withdrawn after 'further checks'.

These 'further checks' should be completed prior to an answer being given to the customer, unless it's made clear it is a 'provisional' accept pending further information being requested.

At the same time customers then complain about not getting an instant decision, sometimes calling up and asking questions about it.

Some checks are also not instant. A provisional accept would also give an incorrect impression in that case.

Either are better than misleading letters/emails confirming the account is open and active, and then having the facility withdrawn.

I had the same with First Direct.
    -Accepted online
-Letter to say I had been declined
-Another letter with my welcome pack, asking for signatures and giving me my account and sort code

I applied for an HSBC bank account and they gave me two, one being an advance.
