Shocked that car insurance lower on renewal

Last year I paid £189 for my car insurance which I already thought was really cheap. I moved house a few months back and the quotes I got running up to renewal were all around £400. It didn't occur to me to check with my existing provider (always goes up...) but was amazed to get a renewal quote in the post for £147. There are no obvious reasons. There aren't any claims that have dropped off and I've moved to what I'd have thought would be a more risky area.

Anyway, the point of posting is to see whether many people get lower quotes on renewal. As mentioned, mine have always gone up before in over 20 years of driving.

I renewed mine today with the same provider, but had to beat the quote down considerably. Even so, I feel considerably out of pocket (I have been driving safely for 25 years). Comparison websites gave me silly quotes, the lowest of which was double what I paid today. I'd be delirious with joy if I got away with paying less than £150 pa!

OP, I'd love to know what you're driving...?

It's a 55 plate VW Golf 1.4 FSI so they wouldn't be paying out big bucks!

Mine also down with Aviva ..only £10 but better than an increase, went to compare and cheapest one £40 more....so for the 4th year running Aviva has been the cheapest.

Why wouldn't they be paying out big bucks?. Does your car cause less damage when it crashes?, does it have some special ability to not cause any injuries? :rotfl:.

I figured it was obvious that I was referring to the types of claim where the value of the payout are related to the value of the car. I doubt my insurance would be £147 pa if I was driving a car worth 30k.

You may find the modern MK7 Golf is cheaper than your current one, went from a MK5 to MK7 and the insurance had nearly halved, the last 2 renewal invites were the cheapest and this year was as good as the same as last year even though news reports suggeteing a 13% increase across the board.

One of my cars is 39k and is £139 a year. Another is £70k and that is £189 a year.

The point being made is that if you have an accident that is your fault and you kill someone or injury them, the fact you drive a golf is not going to reduce the bill.

The cost is not so much in the value of the car but the large liability for more serious stuff.
