My father only drives MMTs, which he picks up cheaply (because nobody else wants them). He clocks up decent mileage in them, and hasn't yet had a gearbox or clutch related fault. He fully accepts that he might at some point!
He currently has a renault and a Smart roadster.0 -
The only thing i would suggest, assuming the car is presently running correctly is to check on the service history to see if its had a gearbox oil change at the correct time, if its been missed (it shouldn't as Toyota specify oil changes in almost everything except the newer TC autoboxes in some models) it would be worth getting done when next serviced.
You will find Toyota main dealer regular servicing to be reasonably priced, and major services usually include proper brake servicing where many makers do not, but worth getting quotes elsewhere for any work that gets flagged up during those services as dealer friction etc parts can be quite expensive.0 -
Afterwards I realised that MMT stood for Multimode Manual Transmission, and the reviews online for this are appalling, I feel like it would be unsafe to drive, and as a new driver I am now scared to drive it.
A car isn't unsafe to drive just because some reviews aren't favourable. There is no need to be scared to drive a car based on reviews you've read.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
All cars have weak points. Nobody ever posts the good online either0

We had one of the first Toyota Auris MMT cars, bought 2 years old with 6k on the clock, PX'd it 3 years later with over 70k on it regularly serviced and never had any problems with the engine or gear box.
Main thing is to drive gently, some/many people drive by accelerating hard and then braking hard and this gives an uncomfortable jerky drive.0 -
Good job you only did 5mph in it.
I read on the internet that when you get to 7mph they explode in a balls of flames.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
