Mains water pressure in toilet

Since changing my CH to a combi and getting rid of the tanks in the attic my toilet is now fed from the mains and the water just gushes in to the cistern and is very noisy and in this weather very cold, which causes a lot of condensation on the outside of the cistern, especially after having a shower even although there is an extractor fan.

Similar to this:

I tried turning the isolation ball valve down slightly but this just causes more noise especially through the ball valve.

Any suggestions as to how I can reduce the water pressure or even suggest a filling valve more suitable for mains water pressure?

Ok dead easy one this. You see in the image you posted a little red part attached to the black arm? This is the bit you need. The valve is a high OR low pressure valve. High pressure is when the toilet fills direct from the mains, low when you have a cold header tank in the loft. (Don't knock it btw, a lot of advantages in having a tank, 30 flushes after the mains fail for example...)

Here's what you do. Unscrew the blue outer nut where it joins the black arm. Inside you will find a small BLUE valve like the red one clipped to the arm, but the fill hole is much smaller to reduce the flow because of the higher pressure.

Take this out carefully, behind it is a rubber washer and plastic piston that can stay in place, although you could carefully clean everything up as lime scale can be a problem.

Simply swap the red and blue parts over. If the other is missing you can get them for pence, the one you want is for high pressure, if your not in a hurry PM me, I'll dig one out and post it free gratis for a MSE favour!! (might be a few days I'm off work due to a bereavement).

This is a classic problem, if you have a low pressure valve in a high pressure (fill) cistern then when you flush the refill sounds like Niagara falls, if you have a high pressure valve in a low pressure cistern then after someone flushes you have to wait ages for the next flush it takes so long to refill. Awkward if you have deposited a "3 flush monster".

Screw the bue bit back on and hey presto! Job done. Now you can - er - do a big job.

Here is a pic of the actual valve, is it the same valve as your pic?

My original pic was just for illustration purposes.
  • You need the one with the smaller hole not the red one on the valve arm, personally I would replace the valve for one of these

I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
