I too have a hr/ reference question (sorry olivia111)

After sticking it out in a company that I didn't want to be at for 8+ years , I finally escaped. I joined as a temp ,just before the greatest recession of our times and because of my age etc couldn't get out .

Background to my initial question : old boss retired. Company streamlining even in senior positions, meant that my new boss was
the personnel officer .

Trying not to bore you too much but :
I was put on a final written warning ( suspended for 2 years) , for retaliating to to her insensitive treatment of my new diagnosed, illness at the time.
The h r guy couldn't understand what made me go from 'a nice likeable bloke ', but he had to stick with the company of course.
No I didn't appeal. I also had to apologise to her.

Forward to November 2016, I had to give one weeks notice instead of a month, because I had sold my flat and had a week to get out.

I did not get bonus , so I assume the company are a little bitter.

Having said that , I left on good terms. We shook hands.
I made sure of saying good morning to her each day etc.
I forgot to ask her if I'll get a reference. So much going on .:)
I'm taking around 6,months off. Long story.
I explained situation to her and the company , so hr know my reasons for quitting.

I'm not overly stressed about it, on a Friday night but while I'm tying up loose ends, I thought I'd ask, your opinion:)

Thanks

just read your essay and can't see a question anywhere.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • Don't worry until it becomes an issue, nothing you can do. Apart from lining up some 'character' referees for very worst case. Don't willing volunteer this until you have to :o (trust me I did this typed up all the info needed and they sure made sure everyone on that list was still alive lol!) keep payslips to definitely.

I once left a company couple of years ago for prospective, where the office manager and directors just walked off no bye bye on last day, I was gutted, however, they are one of the first who will respond to me if I need to send them an email about reference approach.

I left a company after 5 years of service and found it took them nearly a year before they would even write references at manager/business level. I remember when first leaving being told in an exit interview hey sorry that will go to central HR services to write (Going back a fair time now) just imagined after a year their policies changed so it's always worth trying as you never do know.
  • I'm in the position of having left a job after very unsavoury dealings (got bullied, managers covered it up, I sent them a solicitor's letter). Fortunately I've now got a part time job through a friend's ex boyf so I didn't need to worry about references in the end.

But if I hadn't got this job, my back up plan was to do voluntary work for a few months, then get a reference from the company I did the voluntary work for.

There would be certain jobs where you probably have to get a reference from your past employer, or maybe two past employers, but I only work in admin and I reckon most employers I would be applying to would accept a reference from a voluntary agency (although there's no absolute guarantee of that). There are ways and means around problematic references for a lot of people, although not for the likes of the police or bankers/finance workers.

    Thanks for reading :)
It was long winded . Just.wanted to know if I will get reference?
    I assume I would .
  • Thanks sort of / keep calm:)
    I assume I would get reference . I've been told that , it's illegal
to give a bad reference .
Believe it or not , I'm not overly worried as before I took a break ,have been less than 6 months unemployed since leaving school.

I rarely took time off work . I even run the dept solo while my colleague was having a knee replacement , when I only had one eye functioning.
The left eye collapsed , with occular myasthenia gravis .

My new boss criticised my hsp appointments . Final straw came when , out of the blue, she made a sarcaastic comment . I exploded. Never swore, just shouted at her sitting down the whole time .
The only way this could be an issue , is that it is my most recent employer.

Well done for standing up to them.

This place i left was very clique( spelling). My colleague was trying to put people against me as he wanted total control.
A lot of people preferred him to me. A lot saw through him.
He is now stuck. He hasn't got me to fall back on changing shifts , for his disabled wife . She is now dying in hsp ,and he is now very busy.
    Karma , etc:)

    I assume I would .

Nobody can give you a definitive answer to that!

Unless you work in one of a few regulated professions there is no legal obligation for an employer to respond to a reference request at all if they don't want to.

In your next post you say
I've been told that , it's illegal to give a bad reference .

That is total nonsense! They can say anything they like as long as it is true and not deliberately misleading.
  • Thanks undervalued :)
When I'm ready to return to work , I'll be going via the agency route .
When I used to go to agencies , you could be frank and upfront .
They would tell me what to say and what not to say :)

So long as I don't run company down , in interviews I should be fine :)

    Thanks
