Problem with car
Options
Hi
My brother bought a Golf in June last year, in October there was a problem with the brakes, the car came with 3 months warranty from the dealer and as it was 4 months after buying he has been trying to find someone who can repair it. He has taken it to multiple garages but no one can actually find the problem, he even took it to a specialist VW place who still can't find the actual problem.
I was just reading about warranties and it says all used car dealers are responsible for faults for 6 months from initial purchase...can anyone confirm if this is true? 6 months has passed now so not really relevant for this but would be useful to know for in the future..
Many thanks

What is the problem with the brakes?
Brakes are wear and tear items so often not covered under warranties.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Something to do with the ABS unit my dad thinks who is OK with cars. I think basically there is no pressure when you put your foot on the brake, he has bled the whole system and had a garage run it through their diagnostics and had no luck in finding out exactly what is wrong. No one knows why there is no pressure as there is no leak of brake fluid but no pressure. I think the last garage he took it to mentioned replacing the calipers but they said it probably wont make any difference but they can't think of anything else...0

1. Was the fault present when car was purchased? If not then not dealers problem.
2. Sounds like the master or slave cylinder0 -
Possibly, the brake servo.0

Golf brakes have to be bled using air pressure. You can't bleed them normally. Are the garages he is using VW specialists? If not, try a specialist garage. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

Hi all
thanks for the replies, one garage was a VW specialist place, another was my friend who I think said he bled them electronically...I am no mechanic and have no idea what that means.
Surely a garage that is selling a car must have some kind of guarantee that the product you buy will be useable for a certain timeframe?

Its 6 months under the Sale of Goods act. Hence saying it has a 3 month warranty is menaingless as by law you have 6 months though maybe stretching the Sale of Goods Act to equate to a warranty might be going too far. Nevertheless it does cover any major issue with the car. You might need to get tough with the dealer though as they won't like fixing it now its out of their jackanory warranty period.0

1 sale of goods act?
2 Op says purchase was over 6 months ago.
To answer Ops original question. No a dealer is not responsible for all faults in first 6 months.
However dealer is responsible for all faults which were present at time of sale. As defined by the Consumer Rights Act 20150 -
We don't know the age of vehicle or value. Replies could be very different for £500 10 year old car to a 1 year old ex demo.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

Braking systems aren't the most complex systems in the world, a competent mechanic should be able to diagnose it!!!0
