My parent are flying to america with continental airlines this week. Can my mums gas hair tongs go in hand luggage?

I am pretty sure that gas canisters come under the banned list of items not allowed on any flights either as hold or hand luggage.
Not sure if they would be allowed in the cabin with no gas, to be sure pack them away in the hold, it may depend on their shape and effectiveness as a weapon.
If she really insists on having some in the US she might be better off buying some when she gets there.Signature No Longer acceptable -
