Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
We joined By a year ago on an excellent tariff, thanks to MSEs website, and have had a totally trouble free year with them. The varies is now due to expire and we want to continue on a similar basis if possible. BG say they have nothing similar and we have to talk to MSE. I entered all the details but it tells me we will have to pay a minimum of £130 extra this year. Can anyone help please?

My friend is in the same situation today. The best deal I can find for him is Iresa Limited dual fuel one year fix. The collective deal was brilliant while it lasted.I was on it for a few months but went to a slightly cheaper deal with Sainsburys Energy mainly to collect £40 cashback and that expires in June.

  • Prices have risen in the last 6 months so you will not find a new deal cheaper than the one that is ending. See this news article for more http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/energy/2017/01/record-numbers-switched-energy-supplier-in-2016
All you can ask for is to find the cheapest deal for yourself. But it will be more expensive.

In your situation, I would start running comparisons now and not wait for MSE to come up with another collective switch: the last one was never promoted as the offer was above the cheapest deals already on the market. Suppliers are also not allowed to enter into deals with individual customers. They can only offer you the tariffs displayed on their website.

The recent energy market reforms - designed to make the market more competitive - have, imho, made it considerably harder for consumers to find the best deal. Suppliers are offering their cheapest deals to new customers only; doing deals with one comparison (PCW) site to offer a limited amount of switches to new customers; no longer listing themselves on comparison sites to avoid having to pay PCW referral fees, and getting into the murky World of cashbacks/rewards which 'hide' high standing/unit prices. The bottom line though is that all offers on the market are considerably less attractive than they were a year ago.

If you want to 'hedge your bets' in the hope that MSE will come up with a spectacular market leading collective offer, then switch now to a supplier with no exit fees.

I'm also on the Collective Feb 2017 and have already started shopping around and I have accepted that I'll be paying a fair bit more. Scottish Power work out £100 a year cheaper than BG's best offering with the £30 cashback going on my last 12 months usage so my intention is to ring up BG and see what they can offer given the last time I switched away from them they phoned up three weeks later, presumably when they'd got the request from my new supplier, offering me £100 however it was a week too late to cancel the switch.

Given they're haemorrhaging customers there may be a deal to be had.

If you really want to remain with BG (why???) then you will have to pay according to their tariff, but at least you can ensure you are on the best BG tariff for you.

Don't forget that Sainsburys is supplied by BG. Maybe you would be happy with that? But why not take advantage of the cheapest supplier & tariff for you???

Most people on the cheap collective tariffs on offer last year will be paying considerably more when those fixed deals end - particularly for electricity.

I am not trying to be rude but how do you know that you got a great deal from a single supplier? Suppliers do not do deals and they will only offer you one of their tariffs. More importantly, the best deal for you may not be the best deal for me as the annual projected cost varies with usage and postcode.

For example, if I switched to EDF today it would cost me £210 per year more. The cheapest dual fuel deal for me is only £129 per year more. My point is that is worth doing a full market comparison if you want the best (cheapest) deal.

You re right Cardew, I spotted a Sainsburys Energy electric tariff which was slightly cheaper than the BG collective Feb 2017 and switched exit free to get 4 more months and it actually broke thro the 8p barrier for single rate at 7.8 p/kwh ! cheapest electric in the UK . That ends in June. That deal I got is now stuck in a vacant property I own and I could nt transfer it to my new bungalow. The best I could get last month was 10.5 p kwr with Robin Hood and 2.4 p/kwh with Daligas. Daligas are STILL faffing tho as of yet and I fear it may fall through so maybe Iresa Energy is the one to pile in on at the moment for a year. They are offering similar rates in my area

  • Hi all,

We're planning to run another collective switch, but we don't yet have any details around dates which we can share.

As soon as we can share more, we'll cover it on the site. If we are able to run another collective, then it'll also be written about in the weekly Money Tips email which you can sign up to here:

    Thanks,
