There's no comparison is there. A sweet little southern traditional fishing village (also a historic harbour for unloading cargoes of stone, coal, timber and pottery) compared to a harbour/docks in the North that was the busiest fishing port in the world in the 1950's. Both steeped in a hard grafting history... one in a picturesque setting and one not so - to some.

I do see you're on the same wavelength. I thought you might have used Rick Stein's Cornish port of choice, Pastow. ;)

Looe's not really that great to look at... well, not the crowded tourist side - and the other side of the inlet's not worth visiting as there's nothing there.

It's not really "a nice day out" after you've been once. :) Actually, like most places in Cornwall, it's not EVEN "a nice day out" as it's too small to fill a whole day ... the trouble with Cornwall, unless you're doing an activity, or sitting on the sand all day, is that if you go somewhere to look, it's all over and done with inside 2 hours and now you've got to think of where to go next. You need 2-3 things/day to work out to do.... and lots of distance between each place you could go to next .... lot of hard work really.

I am over-familiar with Padstein, which I won't go into here... but there aren't many fishermen there either. Mostly posh boats in the inner harbour - and the outer harbour's got a few/small boats bobbing about. They probably catch more lobster/crab to be honest, that's in abundance along that bit of the coast.

The main meal of the day will be shortly .... because I didn't really eat much yesterday and I'm "motivated enough to peel some spuds".... which then determines that I'll most likely be eating by 1ish.

EDIT 12:29: Spuds ALL peeled.... and cooking. Finished off the lot in the end, rather than leaving the final 3-4 smallest ones, which'd make it harder to feel like bothering to do them as they're fiddly.... I'd started so I decided to finish.

    EDIT: 1:05. Scoffing.

Anybody here use the Maggi liquid seasoning?

I'd recommend them for an easy way to add an extra 'something' to any savoury dish really.

When I'm having a lazy day this means even cardboard would have some flavour :p.

They do a hot one too:

Not me. The thing is ... when you go into a shop, there are a gazillion choices, so unless one comes to your attention you won't even notice it on the over-stocked shelves as you head for what you know/recognise.

It's not a "must have that, sounds exciting" name has it :)
Liquid seasoning ... sounds a bit "nasty" as if there are all manner of bodily fluids and entrails squidged into a liquid slurry and bottled.

    :)

If you say it's good I'll keep an eye out and might get round to buying some at some random point. Do you use Worcestershire sauce at all? And, if so, what's the difference between this and that?

So, tomorrow, how about: mashed leftover spuds mixed with onion and fried till crispy :D lovely with almost anything.

Fridays are just made for comfort food.

I don't use wooster sauce because it's not veggie. I do use Hendersons Relish and love that to pep stuff up.

The Maggi sauce is less tangy / spicy and more savoury... sort of 'meaty' really.

I grab it to pep up cheap pasta sauce, ready meals or when something just tastes too bland.

It's really good with cheap noodles and some nuked veggies - makes it more sophisticated :rotfl:.

Have you tried Amazon Pantry? That's where I get my weird and wonderful stuff plus all the usual suspects. They stock all sorts of everyday stuff and you can get a great big box delivered for £2.99 (or free if you include selected products). They stock Morrisons brand as well as all the usuals so it's a good way to get cheap stuff if you live a distance from a budget store.

I've stockpiled Heinz soup from my last delivery as it was 50p a can and I'm addicted to sarnies dunked into tommy soup.

Love Amazon Pantry; have a mooch, they've got some bargains.

    I can't use an oven or a hob.... :)

I've already decided that, as the spuds exist, I'll knock out some bubble & squeak, which might make it into rounds, or might just be one big cake of it. Toaster oven baked. They might/might not have onion tossed in too... which might be white or red.

Just made some smoked mackerel fishcakes for dinner later ....they need to be in the fridge for a few hours before they are fried but actually it was good excuse to stop work for a while and get messy :D They are pretty big and would probably kill you instantly if you got in the way of a flying one.

Same old problem of course ...one pack of mackerel fillets out of the freezer and at least 3 probably 4 fishcakes back in. Still on a positive I did use a pack of very sad looking spring onions and 3 potatoes from my European Potato mountain. Will serve tonight with some minted peas and yoghurt.

PN Dinner for me is in the evening but when I was a kid Dinner was at midday ish at school. (Dinner Ladies, School Dinners ) I like to stick to having a main meal in the evening (usually 7 ish) makes me feel like a normal member of the population :rotfl:

Amazon pantry's not on my radar ... I'm more of a "randomly decide I need bread, so will walk to Lidl to get a 24p loaf ... and maybe some sausage rolls" type. £2.99 for delivery, on my budget, just doesn't stack up, that's 2-3 days of food! For £2.99 I could really treat myself :O

I will investigate it ... had no idea there were "bargains". I assumed that there'd be a delivery charge and most things would be RRP priced.

AP is now my Project of the Day.

I'm a uni-tasker ... bit of a nuisance when it comes to cooking ... and everything else. Once I am distracted, I can spend hours/days on that one track. That's one of the reasons I love the microwave and the toaster oven - you set a timer and they ping and shut down.... In fact, one of the reasons my dinner took so long to cook just now is because I set the microwave to 5 minutes, but then I tend to be slack at getting back to it .... then I turned the slices and did it for another 5 minutes, by which time I was caught up in something, so they sat there a bit longer... then I turned the slices/checked and put them on for 4 minutes. I also can't have the microwave and the toaster on at the same time (foibles).... so I nuked the spuds/beans first, then put the pasty in the toaster.... as that was cooking I mashed the spuds and portioned up half into the fridge for the bubble/squeak. Once the pasty was done, I turned it off and unplugged it at the wall, then I did a quick zap of the beans/spuds again for 30 seconds.

My sibling put a chicken in the oven and "forgot" for 5 hours.... and she doesn't have my foibles.
