Do I need an electrician for this?

Patently, whoever did the wiring the garage wasn't properly qualified or at the least did a rubbish job.

Feed from fusebox (front of garage) goes to a junction box (at the back of garage). From there, one line goes through a hole in the wall to a socket on the opposite side. The other line goes to a double socket diagonally opposite the fusebox.

I want to relocate the socket closer to the front, ideally on the same wall as the fusebox. I also want to secure the junction box (it's just hanging in mid air!).

If I remove the wire from junction to socket, I'll be able secure the junction box to the wall and then add a new line to a socket where I want it.

My main concern is whether this is something that is notifiable and hence requires an electrician or whether I can relocate the socket myself.

Who the hell is going to know.
If you are confident that you can do the job, then do it.
As far as I know, we don't yet have electrical police going around checking if every little electrical mod is "legal".
No doubt things will fall on me from a great height for expressing this dangerous opinion on this forum.

Leaving aside the issue of notifying, certainly an Electrician should be engaged to assess the suitability of what is there and, if necessary (which it sounds like it is), to carry out remedial works.
  • Just do it! :)

Sounds like you are confident with the work and are only going to improve the situation.

Notify who? To do non structural work in your own home the only person you have to notify is your other half when you proudly announce you've done it and want kudos!

Unfortunately, any major electrical works is now notifiable to the local building control office. Moving a socket, changing a light fitting, or adding a fused spur are regarded as minor works and not notifiable.

As far as the OP is concerned, if he feels competent to do the work, it sounds fairly minor. Just make sure the cable is in a suitable conduit, the cable is adequately sized, and everything is securely fastened. If in doubt, get a qualified electrician in.

i would agree with others, if you feel competent just do it. Sounds like you'll only be improving the situation. No one will ever know.

Well it's nice to know that I'm not alone in my opinion.
  • Thanks. I thought it might be notifiable under part p and esp as in garage.

More than happy to relocate the socket. It will be a better job than leaving a junction box hanging in mid-air.
