IGT gas supply. Any help/advice available?
Hi Folks!
I've been in this house for 4 years now & been with SP & most recently MSE BG Collective Feb 2017. Now looking for a new deal/supplier and have just discovered that my the gas supply comes via a network of pipes not owned/maintained by Nat Grid but by an independent gas transporter - an IGT. Who knew!
It transpires that these IGT's charge the gas companies more for using their network than does Nat Grid but that the big 6 have always just absorbed the additional cost (approx £8/9 per month I've been told by USwitch), however, most of the smaller suppliers, if they'll supply via an IGT network at all, don't - they pass on this cost to the homeowner. Fair enough I guess, but nowhere on a comparison site is there a means of discovering .....
a) Whether the smaller suppliers that top the table will supply via an IGT network
or
b) What they charge per month for doing so if they do. They won't even tell USwitch.
It seems that to get a reasonably accurate idea of your gas charges going forward you have to call the gas supply companies direct to ask - which is a bit of a hassle! It took me half an hour to speak to AVRO this afternoon about something, but unfortunately that was before I even knew I had an IGT issue to discuss.
Does anybody else have gas supplied via an IGT (I'm told it's mainly something that occurs in rural areas) and if so - how do you achieve accurate quotes for your energy before you switch?
Thanks in advance for any info/advice/guidance anyone can offer - much appreciated.
Cheers! Andy

I have switched many times in the past 2 years with an IGT supply. Some of the smaller suppliers will not accept IGT transfers as it is still a manual process and I guess they cannot be bothered. Few suppliers charge anything extra for an IGT gas supply - with the exception of Bulb. MSE CEC shows in the tariff information if there is a problem with a supplier accepting an IGT transfer.
From my past experience, EDF, E.oN, ZOG, Ovo and Iresa do not charge extra for an IGT supply.
PS. Most new builds are IGT supplied. It is a cheap way for the developer to get a supply established. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Consult a comparison site and find the best deal for you.
In the unlikely event it is Bulb, move onto the next cheapest as they charge a whopping £100 extra per year.
No other supplier I know charges extra for being served via an IGT, but not all suppliers accept an IGT. All the Big 6 do. For anyone else, check their website, or give them a call, to ensurre they are prepared to accept customers served via an IGT.
Some comparison sites (such as the CEC) will mention if the supplier does not accept IGT customers where known, but don't take lack of a mention as an assurance they do.
If in doubt, post the supplier here and you'll soon be told whether or not they accept customers supplied via an IGT.0
